Knowledge and practice of safety injection among nurses in Vietnam National Hospital of Pediactrics in 2017

Objective: Injection has an important role in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention. It can cause the adverse health effects and patients when the injection is not followed as technique procedure or not performed safely by healthcare workers.

Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted to describe the current situation of knowledge and practice of safety injection among nurses in Vietnam National Hospital of Pediatrics in 2017. The study design with quantitative and qualitative approaches was applied into this study. A total of 146 nurses in 8 departments in Vietnam National Hospital of Pediatrics were recruited for self-administered questionnaire and observation. The representatives of leaders/managers in hospital and head nurses were invited to in-depth interview and focus group discussion.

Main findings: the proportion of properly knowledge and practice among nurses were about 61% and 39%, respectively. Strengthening of the effective training courses for nurses in hospital; increasing the focus training of pediatric specialties for nurses and updating materials according to the MOH’s Guidelines on safety injection; providing the adequate and convenient facilities for safety injection practicing; strengthening the inspection and supervision of implementing safety injection in hospital.

Conclusions: These are the necessary solutions to improve the properly knowledge and practice of safety injection among nurses in Vietnam National Hospital of Pediatrics.
