Health communication and education for patients in 6 provincial hospitals of Long An province and associated factors in 2016

Objectives: The study aims to describe the situation of Health Communication and Education (HCE) for patients and explore a number of associated factors.

Methods: This study was conducted using retrospective method with secondary data from 2015-2016, in combination with qualitative method, in 6 provincial hospitals of Long An from February to June, 2016. Quantitative data was collected from the HCE plans, reports, documentations, decisions, equipment and infrastructure and analyzed using Excel. Qualitative data was collected from 18 in-depth interviews and 06 group discussions and analyzed by themes.

Results: 100% of HCE staffs at the hospitals were in part-time positions; the equipment available for HCE activities only met 45% of the required criteria and the funding was limited. However, the types of activities still achieved 88.3%; operational quality and management achieved 91.7% compared to the performance rating scale of Long An Center for Health Communication and Education. A number of HCE associated factors were pointed out, including lack of HCE activity collaboration among health staffs, lack of materials, equipment and funding.

Conclusion: 100% of HCE group members in hospitals were in part-time positions, but HCE activities were still suffcient thanks to efforts made by those members. The leaders of the Provincial Department of Health as well as the Hospitals are recommended to provide more investment for HCE facilities, incentive mechanism; recruitment of full-time HCE staffs, and development of HCE activity collaboration mechanism for all health staffs.
